Horses at Summer Camp and Bounceback Retreats

Prior to arriving at camp for the first time, most of our children have never been near a horse. They are very excited at the prospect of riding, yet also afraid of the horses.

Upon arrival, each child is assigned his or her horse for the week and there is time set aside to ride and spend time with that horse every day.

Amazing things happen between the horses and the children!

Fear of the animal is quickly replaced by a love for “their special horse.”

Horse hugs, whispers, and kisses are a common occurrence at the hitching post.

Currently in our program, courage and confidence are gained as children learn the basic skills of riding in the outdoor arena.

Then, we progress to trail rides. Each group starts on the flat area of camp and then heads up to hills that seem like mountains to these “cowboys” on their first ride.

As children overcome their fear of going up and down that first hill, the smiles start spreading!

The riders are so proud when they come back to the arena and they gain so much confidence as they learn to control an 800 or 900 pound mighty steed.

For once in their lives, these children can control something larger than they are and they learn to do it in a positive way!
